playlist: jonathan nigro.

i met my friend jonathan about 5 years ago.
we've hung out exactly one time together, in person, for real.
he lives in the states.  i do not.
but we stay in touch.
through texts, email, and social media, mostly.
it's all very 21st century.

not to minimize his other talents but, when it comes to jonathan, there are basically 2 things to know:
1- he's an awesome drummer (i realize that i sometimes use the word "awesome" too lightly/easily - this is not one of those times).  he's been in more bands than anyone i know.  these bands include but are not limited to: world atlas, atari, translove airways, joe bataan, snakes & music, and sun airway.  his current project is jackets.
2- he loves his dog ophie.

i asked some friends to compile a list of the 10 songs they've listened to most in the past year.
in no particular order, this is jonathan's:

- Spiritualized -- Take Your Time -- Royal Albert Hall October 10 1997
This is by no means my favorite Spiritualized song, but this live version moves me. It is a beautiful ascension to heights not found on the album version.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IiaLcxz_tkE

- The Specials -- Too Much Too Young -- The Singles Collection
I watched This is England for the first time while living in Portland last summer and became slightly obsessed with all things Skinhead (the good kind) and Rude Boy. This album was constantly going.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2MYBlSF_HTs

- Grand Funk Railroad -- Footstompin' Music -- Classic Masters
I'm a sucker for vintage honky funk and you can't get much better than Grand Funk. This track will make the most jaded soul want to move it.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w3NXgM_LGQA

- The Misfits -- Angelfuck -- Box Set (disc 4)
This is, in my humble opinion, the best American punk band of all time. They are NJ meatheads and the lyrics are just dumb, but I can't deny my love of Danzig's vocal styling and melodies. You can't help but feel badass rocking this tune, especially in the edgeless American NW. Punk rock NE style!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CgBJHUaC_Zo

- Camera Obscura -- Let's Get Out of This Country -- Let's Get Out of This Country
I always go to Camera Obscura to get my fill of twee pop when I have become slightly weary of Belle & Sebastian (who I adore). Put it on and drive into the country with a big smile on your face people.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2a010PbaiHs

- Tender Trap -- Do You Want a Boyfriend? -- Dansette Dansette
My best friend turned me on to this group, featuring the undeniably amazing Amelia Fletcher of Heavenly fame. It's just really good and the video features the Betsey Trotwood pub in London where I played on tour with my twee band, which I thought was neat. Who doesn't love all things Charles Dickens?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qFbLEjsdQQY

- The Charlatans -- Jesus Hairdo -- a compilation made by a friend
I've loved The Charlatans (UK) since I first heard The Only One I Know over two decades ago. Baggy Britpop just felt right to me. I unearthed this mixed CD my friend (who I was madly in love with) made for me while I was packing for Portland. A little side note, I was in attendance at the Philadelphia Charlatans' show where the drummer collapsed mid song due to a brain tumor. It was awful.

- Lilys -- Nanny in Manhattan -- Better Can't Make Your Life Better
This album is just good from top to bottom. It's been in my top ten every year since I bought it oh so long ago. I saw them on tour for this record at Maxwell's in Hoboken NJ, a great venue to see anybody play. Also, the TOTPs performance of this song was played LIVE and is great.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h5mCIk9_7CU

- REM -- Hyena -- Life's Rich Pageant
It's one of the best bands ever and one of their best albums, what more can I say? This song is just amazing.

playlist: victoria lord.

my friend victoria is a member of jolie jumper.
she also sings with sunny duval.
she's cute as a button, sweet as cherry pie, and can find a harmony faster than you can say "emmylou harris".
she is the only friend i have who regularly wears cowboy boots, and i love her for it.

i asked a few friends to make a list of the 10 songs they listened to most this past year.
voici la superbe liste de victoria:

Salut!

1- Diamond Rugs – Diamond Rugs

2- Nick Waterhouse – Time’s All Gone

3- Traveling Wilburys - Vol. 1 & Vol. 3

4- Lana Del Rey – Born To Die

5- Whitehorse - The Fate Of The World Depends On This Kiss

6- Father John Misty – Fear Fun

7- Canailles – Manger du bois

8- Bernard Adamus – No2

9- Danger Mouse & Daniele Luppi - Rome: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack

10- Susan Cadogan – Hurt So Good

playlist: tasha cyr.

my friend tasha is a member of the darling demaes and pale ramone.
she also records her own songs under the name m/v lark.
she has a voice that can melt the most frigid heart, and makes the best stove-top popcorn i've ever had.
but those aren't even my top reasons for adoring her
she is, above all, real and true.  a feeler of feelings, an engager in life, and one of the most outstanding human beings i know.

i asked friends to make a list of the 10 songs they've listened to most this past year.
this is tasha's:

1. Wilco -  Nothing'severgonnastandinmyway (again)

"Oh it's tough when loves a weed
That grows inside of me"

2.  Feist - The Bad in Each Other

Because everything she says is TRUE.

3.  Wilco - A Shot in the Arm

Truth be told all ten songs on this list should be from the Wilco Summerteeth album.  We have it on vinyl and whenever my boyfriend comes home he says "you're listening to this, again??"

4.  The National - Afraid of Anyone

I love all the pictures he paints with his words.  "I defend my family with my orange umbrella."

5.  Lissie - When I'm Alone

Her voice drives me wild.  I feel like I could have her life and be totally cool with that.

6. Fleet Foxes  - Blue Spotted Tail

This album is up there with Wilco in terms of number of times my boyfriend has come home and said "you're listening to this, again??"

A few of the songs on this list are ones I've learned with my band, or done on my own, and this one is one of my favourites to play right now.

7. Half Moon Run - Full Circle

I saw these young fellas play at El Mocambo and this song stuck with me for months after.

8. Fleetwood Mac - Go Your Own Way

I didn't know if I should post the lissie version or the original, but I feel like I WAS Fleetwood Mac in a past life, I'll stick with the oridge.

9. Sharon Van Etten - Give Out

A few weeks ago I was at a recording studio and someone actually thought I was Sharon and they got all giddy.  For a second I had a taste of fame.  It tasted like peaches.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=exJ3AG0JIeo

10.  Shakey Graves - Built to Roam

Hot guy playing a suitcase, in alternate tuning live in a barn in Texas?

playlist: audrey PM.

a second list has come in!  for those of us just joining in, i've asked some friends to make a list of the 10 songs they've listened to most in the last year.  today's list is from my awesome friend audrey PM who, aside from being awesome, also writes for nightlife, is a member of montreal bands jolie jumper and otarie, and owns more dresses than all of my other friends combined.

la voici:

Bonjour!

1. Dawn, trame sonore de Pride & Prejudice
Un superbe film, adapté d'un superbe roman. Je l'écoute le matin, un café à la main.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=co1-GiL-pJA

2. Into the Mystic, Van Morrison
J'ai toujours envie de hurler le refrain à pleins poumons: IIIIIII JUST WANNA ROCK YOUR GIPSY SOUL!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gVAnlke_xUY

3. Double Knots, The Living Sisters
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dRpqtzcs8nE

4. I've Just Seen a Face, The Dillards
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k2PAiJyyBbc

5. Parade Song, Lisa Mitchell
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KiF-Rl3WSAU

6. When Will I Be Loved, Linda Rondstadt
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ScOpzm-BYX4

http://joliejumper.bandcamp.com/track/comme

8. No Deliverance, Ladies of the Canyon
Ces filles sont un modèle pour moi.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5aGzzRk5JUk

9. I Will Follow You Into the Dark, Amy Millan
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZjQ2d9ONR6k

10. Walk Right Back, Everly Brothers
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZjQ2d9ONR6k

merci belle audrey!
