so the first thing i should probably say is that i have been the world's worst blogger lately. you should know that i am completely and utterly aware of this. you should also probably know that there is a reason for it, and this reason is, simply, that i quit smoking a little over 2 months ago and that writing makes me want to shove 20 cigarettes in my mouth and smoke them all at once. so... yeah... that explains why i've been laying low on the blogging/writing front. and, also, for the record, on pretty much every other front.

but oh, how i have missed it here!

first of all, you already know that i quit smoking. that's by far the biggest thing. ever. in the history of all things pertaining to me.

secondly, i'm having a video made for my little business. i saw a rough cut of it tonight and i was so excited, i almost had a kristen bell sloth meltdown. i can't wait 'til it's done and i can share it. i wanted to take a ton of pictures when we were making it but i was too busy and forgot. here is the one shot i did take of my friend, audrey:

i wish someone would tell new artists that their first videos don't need concepts. no one knows them yet so no one is sick of looking at them. they don't need a gimmick to distract people. they should be sticking to simpler, easier to make, less distracting, easier to execute performance videos. particularly since artists who are starting out hardly ever have any money, and when you have no money, you can't afford a stylist, or make-up artist or a director of photography, or a decent director, a hairdresser, or any of the things you generally need to make a video look good. for crying out loud, i could have made this kid a better video.

it's been a while, i know.
things have been happening.
and that's all i'm prepared to say about that for now.

but i did want to tell you about something that happened on saturday night.

i was at sparrow, and i was about to leave and i started talking with a lovely girl. she was so sweet and funny and fun, and i said to her: "has anyone ever told you that you look an awful lot like amy millan?". and she said: "i AM amy millan". then i basically went apeshit and told her how much i love her music and, particularly, her solo albums.

and she seemed so genuinely pleased that it made me giddy inside. then, she leaned in and said softly: "look who i'm with!", and i had to look over someone's shoulder to see who she was talking about, and, as i was doing that, amy said: "i'm with feisty". and, low and behold, there was little leslie feist, in all of her bangs and tinyness.

it was a fun, little moment. i love it when you meet someone you're a fan of and they turn out to be even better than you could have imagined.

i received a visit today from a lovely, new client. bronwyn, and her german baker husband andreas, own oestrich soft pretzels here in montreal. she brought me a whole box of their delicious pretzels and i've already eaten 3. there's one left and it's all i can think about as i type this. i have zero self-control.

if you've got a hankering for a yummy treat, i highly recommend them. they also deliver so you don't even have to leave your house! and they make mini-pretzels! how stinkin' cute is that?! next time i have a party, i'm totally ordering from them and having a pretzel table. they come in all kinds of yummy flavours.

also, if i may, ... i just want to take a second to thank you for sticking around, for being awesome, for leaving comments, which i haven't always responded to but which have always totally made my day. there have been so many lovely words from so many of you, and it never ceases to amaze me how much the same we all are. and i guess, if anything, that is what i hoped you and i would both get out of this whole blog/sharing thing.

i found out today that a man i used to work with died on saturday. he had a heart attack. as i was celebrating my 39th birthday with my friends, his family was in the early parts of the worst of it.

i wasn't particularly close with this man so... it's not like that. but still, it's sad, and shocking. because he was only my age-ish. and he was a really nice guy. and he had kids. and it's not fair when it happens before someone has a chance to get old and wrinkly.

it's brutal, isn't it? the way none of us knows who's going to be next... the way, sometimes, you don't get to say goodbye... the way you're supposed to keep going without someone you love.

... and the best you can do is just to live life to the fullest... to be as true and as honest as you can be... to encourage others to do the same... it hardly feels like enough, does it? like we should be doing more... like having a party just to celebrate the fact that we're all lucky enough to still be here... like writing long letters to the ones we love, enumerating all the reasons why they're so awesome and special... like taking more time to help each other out.

i don't know where i'm going with this.

i guess, i just needed to share, and to say:
let's really try to do our very best to make the most of this life, ok?
let's help each other out, and be kind.

i hadn't even heard of "how to make it in america" before a couple of months ago, when my client-friend, bess, posted the trailer for the 2nd season on FB. i've been hooked ever since.

when i first heard this song, i was like: "what?! where did this come from?" because i assumed it was an awesome, old, soul song that had somehow managed to slip past me. but, upon a little googlage, i realized it wasn't. it's actually the first single off of this guy aloe blacc's 2010 album, good things. and, that night, i went to bed a tiny bit smarter, and no less hooked on this song.

this is completely unfair of me to say but i've always thought that michelle williams looks a little like the kind of girl who, if you were playing questions with her, and the question was: "what's the most embarrassing thing you've ever done?", and you proceeded to tell the story of the time you played century club with your friends and got so drunk that you peed on your friend's parents' couch, she'd be all like: "i stole a butter tart from a bake sale", and then you'd be like: "this girl is dead to me". that doesn't mean i don't love her style though.

when i worked in television, i got one of the best pieces of advice i have ever gotten. a co-worker told me: "nadyne, if you pay attention to every little detail, and don't let anything slide, there is no way your work won't stand out from the rest". i have never forgotten that. the person who sewed the little red button on this shirt clearly got the same advice.

this summer, i saw a few girls wearing some high-waisted cut-offs, and i thought to myself: "yeah, that's never gonna happen". susie mcwaist-alot over here has now got me second-guessing myself.

1. moksha yoga is completely changing my life.

2. next week, at this time, i'll be san francisco. i'm so excited at the thought of breathing salty air, i can barely contain myself.

3. i've been watching some of oprah's lifeclasses. i can't say for sure but i may be a little bit of a self-help junkie. i can't help it. it's useful!

4. i bought this shirt at françois beauregard. kind of a sucker for a well-tailored shirt.

5. today, a client and i were talking about senses. and she was telling me how much she loved good food, and eating at nice restaurants. and i told her that, as much as i like a well-prepared meal, i'm just not a foodie. to be completely honest, fancy restaurants are kind of wasted on me. i'm almost happier at a little neighborhood restaurant as i am at mr. fancy's super deluxe house of $29 entrées. and she said: "well, the equivalent for you would be if you lost your hearing and couldn't listen to music anymore". and, i swear, in that moment, i almost started to cry. the thought of that is one of the worst things i can imagine. second only to losing my mom. never being able to listen to a song ever again? can you imagine? so, tonight, i'm listening to songs, as i always do, but with a little more gratitude for the simple fact that i can. and, with that said, i never want to talk about this again because it gives me the serious creeps.

i have an amazing and talented bunch of clients. they're an extremely likeable crew.

there is no way to say this without sounding like i'm trying to suck up so i'm just going to come out and say it: some clients, i love. even though i may just see them once every couple of months. even though i don't necessarily hang out with them outside of our appointments together. even though they have their own lives and i have mine. i love them. i root for them. i think of them when i'm doing the dishes, or when i'm in line at the post office. i wonder how their date went. i wonder if they found a new daycare for their kids. i hope their mom is feeling better. and i am very grateful to what ever forces have brought them to me, and me to them. i feel better just knowing that they are out there in the world/that they exist.

geneviève and her boyfriend, christian, are two of these clients. christian is a fountain of folky/musical knowledge, and not unlike a younger, male version of me. and geneviève and i were probably best friends in a previous life. they're genuine and sweet and talented and interesting and real. all the things i love in people, they have in spades. if i didn't already have not enough time to see my friends, i would want to hang out with them all the time.
