goals group.

i think i want to start a goals group.  i heard gretchen rubin mention them in one of her videos and as soon i even heard the words "goals group" i was all like: "oohhh, what's a goals group?  i wanna be in a goals group!"

if there's one thing i know for sure about myself it's that i like to be held accountable for stuff.  i need to be held accountable.  it's the reason why i was at the top of my class every year until i got to university.  there was no one holding me accountable in university.  as i'm sure you know, some classes are so big that the profs don't even know who you are.  the only courses i did really well in then were the small ones, because i was being held accountable for my work/presence/contribution to class.  someone, besides me, cared.

as an adult, i still find that the goals that i'm held accountable for are much easier to achieve than those that aren't.  so, what seems to end up happening is that my professional goals are achieved fairly easily but there's more of a struggle with the personal ones.  it's easy to get motivated to do work-related stuff because my clients are affected... but when it comes to my personal goals, no one but me is affected, no one but me cares if i'm making progress or not, so they're easier to push aside.

sorry, that was a long way of explaining why i like this goals group idea.

anyway, i did a little research on them and found this interesting site.  the idea for the group is that you meet for 90 minutes, once a month for a year.  the group is comprised of 7 people.  everyone gets 10 minutes per group meeting.  at the beginning of the year, everyone sets 5 goals for themself.  it's designed to help keep you on track with your goals, to offer support, and to hold you accountable.  kind of like AA but for goals.

am i crazy or does this sound really fun?

  1. Seems like a good idea to me...I always push aside my personal goals due to lack of time. This could make my personal goals public-and I would hate (!) to let a group down/fail someone else's expectations.
